One of my last day's on Cal Train, I wanted to start something I might actually keep up. A zombie/vampire/monster a day. While I haven't kept to doing one a day, I have been doing a few a week. This was the most promising one yet. I was really inspired that day by that guy on the train.

This is a bit old, but I really liked this project (the BFG) and have since kept the style going.

Had no time to post earlier in the project because it was so busy. So here is what I turned in a little over a week ago. Its still in the format that my group and I chose to present it in. We decided to run with a 2-d style and I must say I am proud of the group as a whole after seeing everyone's artwork put together, its awesome. Great job to my group mates, Katie Corna, Emily Kruger, Vui Mai, and Christine Nguyen!

Here are some paintings I did after doing the ideations in my previous post. The group decided to change the style a bit so these are toss outs, but I still liked them and finished the paintings. Thought I would post them anyway.

It was a great painting all of these because now I am focusing more on my pen pressure when painting and in some of the paintings you can see my progression of softness in those rounded forms.

So we've started a new project in Nino's Vis. Dev. class and I'm really excited about it. The story is The BFG by Ronald Dahl. Its a children's book.

Here are some ideation that I will take further. They are character designs for 9 of 10 of the giants in the story.

Few... It has been a while. Think its time for a post of something new.

This is a prop design I am currently working on. Its the chair/thrown of the main villain in the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. I took a voodoo influence and tacked it on.

Hopefully more to come in the near future.

So, if there are any out there wondering what I have been up to since I graduated, the here is a bit of the answers.

I have been working on Dave Chai's current summer film. I have been helping in the visual development section. Here is some artwork that will be seen on the walls of the coffee shop backgrounds. This project has definitely been keeping me busy but its almost at an end which means a new job!... I hope!

1st attempt at HDR

Its my first post in a long while. I took a moment to try some photoshop HDR action with some of my photos I took a long while ago. Its a process of layering photos that are exposed to reveal different parts of a scene at different levels. It generally looks unreal because the exposure is not consistent. I don't think I did it correctly however, here is the 1st attempt!

for the 3rd assignment in BFA, we read a story called 'the magic chalk' by kobe abe. its a bit disturbing of a story, i loved it. haha. its about a starving artist who draw's all sorts of objects on the walls of his empty studio. he lives in his studio for weeks living off of the magic food drawings that become real. eventually he meets his end when one of his magical drawings, a woman, kills him. she allows the light of day in and everything that was drawn returns to the wall as drawing again, but he is also taken as a result of living off of the magic.

i chose florian satzinger's art as my style guide. check him out, magnificient character drawings.

this project was difficult for me. i really bombed the character design portion but i think that my environments are decent. the story behind this is that there is a plague, similar to the black plague that swept europe in the 1300's. the characters run off to an abandoned building that they take on as their own. one is an inventor who helps make a flying machine.

the style is based on Neil Campbell Ross. in particular, the thorgal style.

these are the finals from the first project i had in BFA. the story is about a circus in 1929-30 that has to deal with the depression. the character that i developed is the ringmaster and owner of the circus, uncle al. he's tough business man with a terrible temper.

the style was base on a professional, his name is brandon johnson RAGNAR. in particular the type of work he does on his blog king of the road.

october 11th. melissa and i went to armstorng state park which is about half an hour NE of santa rosa ca. it was a long day trip but was worth every minute. the air was crisp, probably like 75 degrees. the view was beautiful with the lush warm tones of the bark and gound against the various deep bright greens of the foliage. ironically, we hardly hiked because melissa had to take pictures for homework and i did it for fun. over the 5 hours we were there, we probably only hiked about 1 to 2 miles. it was nice being out there though. here are the pics:

so i like to take photos. i may not be a pro, but i think i can get a good picture here and there. here are a couple that i took over this summer. 2 over the altamont pass at 2am. the other two are on the in golden gate park of some large salamanders in a pool of water.

at the end of the semester we took out lock smith character designs and put them into a scene. it is a donut shop scene. this shop is located in a poorer part of philly. my character is starting to go crazy but is still functional in society.

so the last few days i have been trying to start the summer projects up. i took my set of h20color paints and paper with me. first i took the opportunity to goto the beach and relax with friends in santa cruz on the 26th of may.

below is a painting of of beach houses and was my 2nd attempt.
next is my last attempt in santa cruz. the light house as some of you may have seen. i was just having fun with the colors and found that the sand made for some really cool texture. most important was that you can brush it off after and it will act like a mask. look at the section around the lighthouse and you can see the mask effect.
and this one was done today, the 29th of may. it is overlooking south fremont. i passed it on the freeway and always wondered what the view was like from there

another belated post. this is from fall 2007. at the conclusion of barron storey's illustration class we had to create a zine. this is my spread from it. the topic was truth/lies. i put a lot of work, emotion, and heart into this piece. i also like purple.

so here is a belated maquette that i made last summer. it was lots of fun but i was not thinking when i made it. i had no drawings to work off of so it was on the fly. i had a lot of reference for it but there was no turn around i drew for it which would have made it easier and quicker to make. but it was for fun and got me playing with the medium more.

here is my character design for my vis dev class. i dont have strong aspirations to be a character designer however i did enjoy this assignment. the character's name is ben, he is slightly mentally ill with polks disease. he is a locksmith-in-training and will end up in a halfway house rather than becoming a full on locksmith.

so here is my revision of our tree house assignment we did for vis dev. i am having trouble making the light look like light coming from behind the boy (gary). i have streaks in it and am now thinking about using a gradient and erasing parts of it i dont want. havent figure it out yet, but i have high hopes for my next pieces because i have been working a bunch more with a couple of brushes in photoshop and think that i will be able to get some nice texture to my pieces.

i am taking a beginning ceramics class. i really do enjoy it and have some of my work posted here to inspire others to look to other mediums for inspiration and for fun! the colors are done by a process called raku. it is a Japanese process where oxidation produces the effects and limiting the o2 is a large part of the process.

in vis dev, our next assignment was to produce work for a feature. it was to be based on our previous story about a two boys who live in fresno, ca in the mid 1960's. these boys have a tree house. thats the break down of the situation. we had to show 2 scenes, one was an exterior and the other an interior but both had to have 2 different lighting scenarios. this is what i have produced. i really tried to push the mood
and story by putting in a bunch of air force related props like various airplane toys, and designing the tree house like a big old gunner ship (b-17'ish). photoshop painting was a great deal of fun and the more i do this the more i want to do it for a living.

the tiger is an in-progress piece which is painted in oil on canvas board.

this piece is from vis dev. it is our first acutal vis dev assignment about a mexican american kid who gets a bad hair cut from his friend.

this piece is from fall 2007 and was done in barron storey's conceptual illustration class. it is an illustration of 6 powerful women athletes from the 1900's.
